MOS Show Review and Gallery: The Struts

IMG_0321The Struts are a rock band from Derby in the UK and they’re taking America by storm this summer on their North American tour. The crowd was diverse, with everyone from high school fangirls to older men in biker gear.  The Struts somehow attracted them all to the same venue. The band’s daring mix of glam and classic rock that still manages to stay current and fresh might have something to do with it.

Seeing The Struts live in Cincinnati was like seeing a production and not just a concert. Vocalist Luke Spiller reminded me of a bedazzled version of Tim Curry’s Dr. Frank N Furter from Rocky Horror Picture Show. He gave a colorful performance during their set, not afraid to dance around in his leather pants and sequined top. The rest of the band played a solid set, but he was clearly the star with the way he played to the audience and drew us all in. Spiller has that type of charisma that puts everyone in just a little bit of awe.

The band released their debut full-length Everybody Wants, almost two years ago and relocated to Los Angeles almost a year after that where they garnered a lot of attention and were quickly slated as a band to watch. The band issued a re-release of Everybody Wants this past January, with five new tracks that didn’t appear on the original. This tour, they opened their set with the title track, and the band came out on stage as silhouettes against dim red lights. When Spiller ran onto the stage the lights came up and the music picked up and the energy and excitement never stopped until the end of the set. If you’ve listened to The Struts, but haven’t seen them live, you need to catch a date on this tour. Their live show adds an entirely new dimension to this already insanely talented band. This isn’t just a show, it’s a brilliantly produced performance.
