I am such a sucker for covers. There’s just something cool about an artist reinterpreting another artist’s work. Something totally new gets created. I have a huge list of covers I love and I feel bad for the ones I had to leave out, but I managed to narrow it down to my ten favorites. You can check my list, as well as the videos for each, below.
10. “Little Lion Man” – Mumford and Sons covered by Tonight Alive
Alright, Jenna’s voice and the guitar parts after the chorus and the bass line during the verses and everything really, but JENNA’S VOICE. I get chills whenever I listen to this.
9. “We Found Love” – Rihanna covered by Forever the Sickest Kids
Just the fact that they do the shout out at the beginning and even shout out Fearless Records already makes me love this cover because, like everything else FTSK does, it makes me smile. This whole cover is just a feel good track you can dance around to.
8. “Problem” – Ariana Grande covered by Hozier
I love that Hozier took this super poppy Mariah Carey-esque song and injected his soulful, gritty sound into it, complete with gorgeous riffs and a gospel choir in the background. It’s amazing.
7. “Let It Go” – Idina Menzel covered by Betraying the Martyrs
Holy shit. That’s all I can say. But not really because I’m saying more. This goes hard. Have you ever wanted to combine Disney princesses with metal? Yeah, me too, so I was thrilled when Betraying the Martyrs covered this. It makes you reconsider how metal the lyrics actually are. And the video is sick.
6. “If I Ain’t Got You” – Alicia Keys covered by James Bay
We all know James is an angel that doesn’t belong to this world, and now he’s created this amazing cover. The original version of this song is already super soulful, but James makes it acoustic and smooth, and he sings it like he wrote it himself. I’ve seen him play it live twice, and both times I was speechless and only had the ability to make goofy noises quiet enough so that no one around me could hear.
5. “Iris” – Goo Goo Dolls covered by Sleeping With Sirens
I have a weakness for SWS, and an even bigger ….fan girl esque…. weakness for Kellin Quinn. Don’t tell anyone. But this cover showcases his range and SWS’ softer side, and the keyboards are beautiful. And it’s one of my favorite Goo Goo Dolls/2000’s romantic comedy soundtrack songs. So it was really no question that it would make my list. Here you go:
4. “Just the Way You Are” – Bruno Mars covered by Pierce the Veil
I love Bruno Mars, but I’m just gonna go ahead and say it…I like this version better than his. Vic’s angsty voice was made for this cheesiness. It melts my heart every time I listen to it, and I love the way the guitars make this song sound so much bigger. It’s so fucking catchy, it’s unbelievable.
3. I’m cheating on this one. I’m including three songs that Our Last Night has covered because they’re all amazing: “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift, “Sorry” by Justin Bieber, and “The Heart Wants What It Wants” by Selena Gomez.
The way that Trevor and Matt trade vocals on these songs makes them so dynamic, and the instrumentals breathe a new life into the songs. I love the unclean vocals added to “The Heart Wants What It Wants” because that song is so emotional and the uncleans definitely portray that. And the way they make “Blank Space” sound kind of sad is what really made me love it.
2. “Blank Space” – Taylor Swift covered by I Prevail
I Prevail is one of my favorite bands, but I swear I’m not being biased. This cover is A+. The uncleans by Eric Vanlerberghe are awesome, and the way they change up the lyrics to “I can make the good girls bad for a weekend,” just give this song a punch. As weird as it is to say, I Prevail’s music has a swagger and attitude to it, and that carries over into this cover. You’ve probably already heard it, but if not, LISTEN TO IT NOW.
- “What Makes You Beautiful” – One Direction covered by The 1975
I love One Direction as it is, so of course this song is close to my heart, but The 1975 somehow makes this boyband anthem into a slow, smooth jazz, seduction song. It’s genuinely almost unrecognizable to the original version, complete with snaps, jazzy electric guitar and Matty on the keyboard. This is definitely my favorite cover, and it’s kept that spot for about two years now.
